It was a dark time when I first moved to Melbourne. The 2020 Pandemic was in full swing and only essential businesses were still operating. No cures available, and no knowledge of how long it would last.
I moved here for a new job in the late Summer. Excitedly, I toured and toured apartments, hoping to find that gem of a cottage near downtown where all of the fun happened. I settled for a newer apartment complex further away with a small studio floor plan.
From here, I didn’t get out much. No one was hanging out, or making friends during that time. My savior during the first few months was my dog Roddy, who kept me company. Not only did he get me up and moving each day for his walks, but he granted me access to one of the only places you could meet people without masks on. The Dog Park.
Friends were quickly made out of my dog-loving neighbors. It was the perfect place to meet and debrief after the work day. Say what you will about renting, but there’s something charming about knowing that most of your neighbors are also brand new to the city. It was with these neighbors that I began getting out and exploring all Melbourne had to offer. Over the course of 2021, Melbourne started to wake back up. It seemed like every week some restaurant or bar was opening back up for business. Not only that, but the food festivals, fairs, and other local events started to come back with new life. Things were getting fun for my inner foodie.
I had a goal when I first moved here: Eat Somewhere New, Every Time. I wanted to explore everything the city has to offer, discover the holes-in-the-wall, the mom & pop’s, and the hidden gems. In the process, I hoped to make good memories and friends, and of course, eat amazing food. Since then, I have definitely repeated a few dishes (They were just too good!), but the spirit of my food journey remains the same. Adventure through food! With my blog, I hope to inspire you to follow along, go out and get to know your city, and enjoy all your local chefs have to offer!
